Endourology is one of the most rapidly advancing fields in Urology due to its minimal invasiveness, the development of miniature endoscopes and an expansion in the availability on energy sources. The Holmium Laser is particularly suited for endourologic use. The lack of adequate descriptive text regarding practical use of this new device compelled authors to prepare this short compendium

The laser penetrates tissue to a depth of only 0.5mm, thus allowing precise cutting with negligible charring or damage to underlying structures. A single fiber can be used for both lithotripsy and soft tissue ablation, a combination unparalleled by any other clinically available energy device. The chapters on practical applications of Holmium laser have been written by urologists with extensive experience in its use.

The aim is to define the basic techniques and review the literature, briefly, on the current status of such applications as are covered in each chapter. The authors have covered practical aspects such as instruments used, access techniques, laser settings, surgical technique and pitfalls.

The book is expected to serve as a ready reference for the students and practising urologists who wish to know all about the existing indications and techniques for use of Holmium laser in endourology.
